India is home to more than 28 lakh ex-servicemen, many of whom have dedicated decades of service to the nation. The Government of India ensures their welfare through adequate pensions, the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme, skill development programmes, and nationwide job fairs.

These initiatives aim to bridge income gaps, enhance employability, and secure dignified livelihoods for those who have served in uniform.

Pension Benefits And OROP Scheme

The Government provides pensions to ex-servicemen in line with existing rules. The One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme reduces disparities between pensions of current and past retirees of the same rank with identical service lengths, ensuring fairness and financial stability.

Employment And Skill Development Opportunities

Multiple re-settlement and skill development training programmes prepare ex-servicemen for roles in Government organisations, Public Sector Undertakings, corporate houses, the private sector, and Central Para Military Forces. Job opportunities are created based on employer requisitions for ex-servicemen candidates.

State-Wise Ex-Servicemen Population: Over 28 Lakhs Beneficiaries

As of June 30, 2024, India has 28,31,109 ex-servicemen. Uttar Pradesh leads with 4,26,179, followed by Punjab at 3,82,694 and Rajasthan at 2,12,415. Other states with significant numbers include Kerala (1,82,368), Maharashtra (2,01,628), and Haryana (1,77,771).

Job Fairs And Corporate Placement Drives

Nationwide job fairs are organised in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), with support from all three Service Headquarters. These events connect employers with ex-servicemen through on-the-spot skill tests, interviews, and direct recruitment.

Reservation In Public Sector Jobs

To further enhance employability, 14.5% of Group ‘C’ and 24.5% of Group ‘D’ posts in Central Public Sector Undertakings and Public Sector Banks are reserved for ex-servicemen. Additionally, 4.5% of these vacancies are earmarked for disabled ex-servicemen and dependents of service personnel killed in action.
