Aadhaar, India's unique identification system, is gearing up to expand its daily authentication capacity from 100 million to 250-300 million, according to Neelkantha Mishra, chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), as per The Business Standard news report.

Speaking at the Global Fintech Festival 2026, Mishra highlighted the rapid growth in Aadhaar authentications and the ongoing technological advancements aimed at enhancing security and efficiency.

Expansion of Aadhaar Authentications

Currently processing around 100 million authentications daily, Aadhaar is preparing to scale this number to 250-300 million. This growth reflects a shift from its initial government-focused use to broader applications, with over 600 entities now utilising Aadhaar.

Mishra noted the cultural shift in government usage, focusing on beneficiary identification and misuse prevention. Trust and convenience have been pivotal in Aadhaar's wider adoption.

Technological Advancements and Security

UIDAI is working on a 10-year technology roadmap, prioritising post-quantum cryptography and AI-based fraud detection. Mishra emphasised the importance of staying ahead of potential vulnerabilities in public and private key systems.

AI is being used for fraud detection, including facial and fingerprint liveness testing, to counteract evolving fraud tactics.

Global Expansion and Infrastructure Development

UIDAI is considering Aadhaar authentication outside India, anticipating increased demand from Indians living and travelling abroad.

However, this expansion poses security risks due to geofencing removal. UIDAI is also building a "hyperscaler-like capability" to benchmark against leading global systems, aiming for seamless infrastructure integration.

Support for Innovation and Startups

UIDAI is fostering an environment for startups and businesses to innovate around Aadhaar. Mishra highlighted the importance of providing secure infrastructure while allowing businesses to develop new use cases.

A collaborative environment is being established for developers to experiment and test solutions before operational deployment.

Conclusion

Aadhaar is set to expand its daily authentications to 250-300 million, with over 600 entities using the system. UIDAI is focusing on post-quantum cryptography and AI-based fraud detection, while considering global authentication expansion. The Aadhaar app has seen downloads increase to nearly 60 million.
