As per PIB, Indian Railways has achieved electrification of 99.2% of its broad gauge network, positioning India ahead of countries like the UK (39%), Russia (52%), and China (82%) in terms of railway electrification.

According to the Ministry of Railways, this milestone highlights India's push towards greener and more energy-efficient rail transport.

Electrification Progress Across Railway Zones and States

As per official data, 14 railway zones including Central, East Coast, Eastern, Konkan, North Central, North Eastern, Northern, South Central, South East Central, South Eastern, Kolkata Metro, West Central and Western have completed 100% broad gauge electrification.

Additionally, 25 states and union territories, as well as all existing broad gauge lines in the North Eastern states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura and Mizoram, have also reached full electrification.

Accelerated Electrification Since 2014

Between 2014 and 2025, Indian Railways has electrified 46,900 route kilometres, more than double the 21,801 route kilometres electrified in the 60 years prior.

During 2023-24 alone, 7,188 route kilometres were electrified, and another 2,701 route kilometres have already been completed in 2024-25.

Environmental and Energy Efficiency Impacts

Rail transport in India now emits 89% less CO2 compared to road transport. Transporting 1 tonne of goods over 1 km by road produces 101 g of CO2, whereas by train, it is limited to 11.5 g.

With all new lines and multi-tracking projects being sanctioned with electrification, India is further reducing dependency on diesel locomotives.

Integration with Renewable Energy Sources

Indian Railways is expanding its focus on sustainability by integrating renewable energy. Around 898 MW of solar power has been commissioned at 2,626 railway stations nationwide. This effort aligns with its broader initiative to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

Regional Electrification Insights

States like Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have surpassed 95% electrification and are nearing full completion. Assam’s network is currently at 92% electrified, with work underway on remaining stretches, while upcoming projects are being planned with full electrification.

Conclusion

Indian Railways has reached 99.2% electrification of its broad gauge network, reflecting a major infrastructure development. This initiative not only brings operational efficiency but also contributes to reduced carbon emissions across India's transport sector.
