As per the PIB report, India’s Defence Production reached ₹1.54 lakh crore over the last decade, registering a 174% increase, according to information shared by the government at the North Tech Symposium 2026 in Prayagraj.
Defence exports during the same period rose to ₹23,622 crore, marking a 34-fold increase. The government said the sector has seen a gradual rise in domestic manufacturing capacity, alongside lower dependence on imported defence equipment.
The figures were shared by Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh during the 3-day event.
The Union Budget for 2026-27 has allocated ₹6.81 lakh crore for defence expenditure, which is 9.5% higher than the previous year’s allocation, according to the minister.
As per the report, the higher allocation comes as defence requirements increasingly include technology-led systems and modern operational capabilities.
Areas such as cyber systems, artificial intelligence, robotics, and quantum communication were highlighted as part of future defence preparedness.
Private companies contributed around ₹15,000 crore to India’s defence exports, the government said. Industry participation in defence manufacturing has widened over recent years across areas including communication systems, unmanned platforms, electronics and mobility solutions.
The government also referred to growing collaboration between start-ups, research institutions, public sector units and the armed forces in the development of indigenous defence technologies and equipment.
The North Tech Symposium 2026 was organised jointly by the Northern and Central Commands of the Indian Army along with the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM). The event was held in Prayagraj from May 4 to 6.
According to official information, more than 280 industry participants and 284 exhibition stalls were part of the symposium.
The programme included technology demonstrations, discussions and meetings focused on operational requirements and indigenous manufacturing capacity.
