India's power consumption recorded strong growth in June 2026, supported by heatwave conditions and the delayed arrival of the southwest monsoon across several regions, as reported by the Business Standard. According to official data, electricity consumption increased to 166.46 billion units (BU) in June 2026 from 149.13 BU in June 2025.
The rise in temperatures led to higher usage of cooling appliances such as air conditioners and desert coolers. As a result, both power consumption and peak power demand registered significant increases during the month.
India's total power consumption rose by 11.62% year-on-year to 166.46 BU in June 2026. In comparison, the country consumed 149.13 BU of electricity during June 2025.
The increase was largely attributed to elevated temperatures across many parts of the country before the monsoon gained momentum. Higher cooling requirements in residential, commercial and industrial segments contributed to the rise in electricity usage.
The country's peak power demand reached 264.76 GW in June 2026, significantly higher than 242.77 GW recorded in June 2025. Rising temperatures and prolonged heatwave conditions increased demand for cooling equipment, placing greater pressure on the power system.
The growth in peak demand followed a period of record-high electricity requirements earlier in the summer season. According to the Ministry of Power, peak demand during the summer of 2026 was projected to touch 270 GW.
The southwest monsoon set in over Kerala on June 4, 2026, later than its usual onset date of around June 1. Following its arrival, the monsoon's progress remained slow during parts of June, allowing heatwave conditions to persist across several regions.
These weather conditions led to increased reliance on air conditioners, fans and desert coolers. Consequently, electricity consumption and power demand remained elevated throughout the month.
India witnessed a series of record peak power demand levels during the summer season. Peak demand touched 257.37 GW on May 18, 2026, before rising to 260.45 GW on May 19, 2026.
It further increased to 265.44 GW on May 20, 2026, and reached an all-time high of 270.82 GW on May 21, 2026. Earlier, peak demand had also touched 256.11 GW on April 25, 2026, surpassing the previous record of about 250 GW recorded during May 2024.

India's power consumption and peak electricity demand increased substantially in June 2026 due to heatwave conditions and delayed monsoon rainfall. Total consumption rose to 166.46 BU, while peak power demand reached 264.76 GW during the month.
The summer season also saw multiple record demand levels, including an all-time high of 270.82 GW in May 2026. With the India Meteorological Department forecasting a slight rainfall deficit, electricity demand is expected to remain steady during July 2026.
