The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has introduced standard timelines for the execution of power transmission projects across the country, as per news reports.

The guidelines, approved by the National Committee on Transmission in April 2026, cover different categories of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) projects and are intended to improve coordination between power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Deadlines Vary Across Infrastructure

Under the new framework, HVDC transmission systems, including substations and transmission lines, will have an implementation period of 48 to 54 months.

Greenfield 765kV and 400kV substations have been assigned a timeline of 36 months, while 220kV and 132kV substations are expected to be completed within 24 months.

Transmission lines will have deadlines ranging from 24 to 36 months, depending on voltage level and route length.

Extra Time Allowed in Difficult Terrain

The CEA has allowed flexibility for projects located in challenging regions such as the North East, Sikkim, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh. Such projects may receive an extension of 6 to 12 months based on local conditions.

Where a scheme includes multiple transmission components, the timeline for the activity requiring the longest construction period will apply to the project as a whole.

Focus on Better Project Coordination

The authority has advised generation companies, transmission developers, DISCOMs and bulk consumers to align equipment procurement, financial closure and construction schedules with these timelines.

The guidance comes as renewable energy additions continue to increase, while transmission infrastructure often requires a longer execution period, delaying grid connectivity for completed projects.

Conclusion

The standard timelines create a common schedule for transmission projects and are expected to help improve planning between generation and network development, reducing delays in connecting new power capacity to the electricity grid.
