India and New Zealand have raised their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, as per news reports.

The two countries also adopted the India-New Zealand Strategic Partnership: Roadmap to 2030, which lists areas of cooperation over the next four years.

Trade and Free Trade Agreement

The two countries have agreed to work towards doubling bilateral trade in goods and services to NZ$7 billion, or about ₹35,000 crore, by 2030. The joint statement said businesses from both countries would be encouraged to explore trade and investment opportunities.

The ministers also referred to the recently signed India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and said both governments would work towards bringing it into force at the earliest. The agreement covers trade, investment, and market access between the two countries.

Agreements Signed

The meeting produced 18 outcomes, including 10 agreements. Among them were a reciprocal logistics support arrangement between the Indian Navy and the New Zealand Defence Force, a framework for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the launch of a maritime security dialogue.

Both sides said they support a free and open Indo-Pacific and reiterated the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Cooperation Across Sectors

The two countries agreed to continue cooperation in horticulture, forestry, dairying and animal husbandry. They also signed a tourism arrangement and encouraged airlines to start direct non-stop services between India and New Zealand. Discussions also covered recognition of seafarer competency certificates.

India and New Zealand condemned the terrorist attacks in Pahalgam in April 2025 and near Delhi's Red Fort in November 2025. The joint statement called for action against terrorism, terror financing, and safe havens.

The leaders also discussed the situation in West Asia, called for restraint, supported uninterrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and reiterated support for reforms to the United Nations Security Council.
