India, ADB Sign $230 Million Loan for Chennai Water and Sewerage Network Upgrade

An agreement signed on 21 August between India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $230 million to upgrade Chennai's water and sanitation infrastructure.
This fund will utilise a part of this ‘Chennai Climate-Resilient Water Security and Sewerage Project’ funds to improve the networks of Chennai and that is the best way to make Chennai’s network climate-change-resilient.
170 Km of Pipelines and 45 Pumping Stations
The project will bring more than 170 km of new water supply and sewer pipelines. It will also cover upgrades to seven water pumping stations and 38 sewer pumping stations.
The government said performance-based contracts will be introduced to improve how water utility assets are managed and operated.
Chennai to Get a Ring-Main Water Network
One of the bigger changes under the project is the planned comprehensive ring-main system. According to the government, Chennai will be the first Indian city to implement such a system.
The closed-loop network is designed to keep water pressure more balanced across service areas and improve the reliability and efficiency of distribution. It is also intended to support more equitable supply and reduce the impact of disruptions caused by natural hazards.
More Digital Monitoring of Water Services
The project will bring digital tools into Chennai's water and sanitation operations, including real-time monitoring, data-based decision-making and improved customer services.
New technology will also be used to reduce hazardous manual sewer inspections and detect blockages faster. Networks in at least two Greater Chennai zones will be prepared for future investments.
