Gujarat Plans to Setup 'SAMARTH' Semiconductor Hub at IIT Gandhinagar with ₹190 Crore Investment

Gujarat is set to establish a ₹190 crore semiconductor research and training centre, SAMARTH, at IIT Gandhinagar as per the news report.
Jointly funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Gujarat government’s Department of Science and Technology, and IIT Gandhinagar, the initiative aims to train approximately 10,000 individuals as semiconductor manufacturing expertise grows within the country.
Training and Development Targets at SAMARTH
SAMARTH, the Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub, plans to train 10,000 individuals including 5,600 undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD students, 1,500 technicians, 1,000 participants through certificate programmes, 230 faculty members, and 230 industry professionals over the next 5 years.
The training will focus on semiconductor research, workforce development, and industry-oriented training.
Collaborative Efforts and Infrastructure
The centre will include advanced laboratories for nano-fabrication training, CMOS process technology, semiconductor device characterisation, process and device modelling, and IC design and prototyping.
By collaborating with national and international institutions, the centre aims to provide an integrated platform for research, training, and innovation, ultimately transforming students into fab-ready engineers and creating licensable intellectual property.
IIT Gandhinagar plans to extend its influence through memoranda of understanding with engineering colleges across Gujarat, offering training programmes at nominal costs.
