Central Railway Announces 76 Special Trains for Christmas and New Year Rush

Central Railway on Monday announced the operation of 76 special trains to manage the surge in passenger traffic during the Christmas and New Year holiday season. The decision aims to provide additional travel options and reduce congestion during one of the busiest periods of the year.
Routes Covered Under Special Services
Speaking to ANI, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila said that several long-distance and regional routes have been covered under the special train plan. These include services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Karmani.
In addition, 8 special trains will operate from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Thiruvananthapuram and another eight from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Mangalore.
He further said that six special services have been planned from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Nagpur, along with six trains from Pune to Nagpur, catering to passengers travelling within Maharashtra and neighbouring regions.
Special Suburban Services for New Year’s Eve
Keeping in mind the heavy passenger movement on December 31, Central Railway has also planned four special suburban trains. These services are aimed at easing late-night travel for commuters celebrating New Year’s Eve and ensuring safe and convenient transport within the Mumbai suburban network.
Passenger Advisory and Operational Measures
Swapnil Nila urged passengers to book their tickets well in advance to avoid last-minute inconvenience. He also advised travellers to follow safety protocols during their journeys. The Railways have strengthened operational arrangements, including staff deployment and traffic management, to ensure smooth movement of trains during peak travel days.
Railway Fare Rationalisation from December 26
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways has announced a rationalisation of passenger fares, effective December 26. According to the revised structure, there will be no fare increase for suburban services or Monthly Season Ticket holders, offering relief to daily commuters. Ordinary-class passengers travelling up to 215 kilometres will also see no change in fares.
For ordinary-class journeys beyond 215 kilometres, fares will increase by one paise per kilometre. Mail and Express non-AC categories will see a hike of two paise per kilometre, while AC classes will also have a uniform increase of two paise per kilometre.

With the introduction of 76 special trains and enhanced operational readiness, Central Railway aims to ensure smoother travel during the festive rush. While fare rationalisation comes into effect from December 26, the Railways has sought to minimise the impact on passengers, balancing affordability with rising operational costs.
