The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved 4 strategic railway multitracking projects spanning 894 km and covering 18 districts across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. With an estimated cost of ₹24,634 crore and a completion target of 2030-31, these projects aim to boost connectivity, logistics and sustainable development.

₹24,634 Crore Investment to Strengthen Railway Network in 4 States

The approved projects include Wardha–Bhusawal (314 km), Gondia–Dongargarh (84 km), Vadodara–Ratlam (259 km), and Itarsi–Bhopal–Bina (237 km), adding a total of 894 km to the Indian Railways network. These key corridors run through 18 districts and boost connectivity to over 3,633 villages with a combined population of 85.84 lakh.

Operational Efficiency and Traffic Capacity to See Major Boost

These multitracking projects are set to alleviate congestion and streamline freight and passenger movement. They will increase operational efficiency, ensure service reliability, and open up robust logistics corridors in line with the PM Gati Shakti vision for multimodal connectivity.

Enhancing Employment and Regional Growth

By facilitating access to Aspirational Districts such as Vidisha and Rajnandgaon, the projects aim to foster regional development and generate direct and indirect employment opportunities. The infrastructure boost aligns with the broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” objective, empowering local communities.

Environmental Gains and Freight Growth Potential

The projected freight traffic increase of 78 MTPA will primarily support coal, container, cement, and food grain movement. The energy-efficient expansion is expected to reduce oil imports by 28 crore litres and CO2 emissions by 139 crore kg, equivalent to planting 6 crore trees.

Tourism and Heritage Connectivity

These projects will improve rail links to key tourist spots like Sanchi, Bhimbetka, Satpura Tiger Reserve, and Nawegaon National Park, encouraging domestic tourism and enhancing last-mile connectivity in heritage zones.

Conclusion

The Cabinet’s nod to ₹24,634 crore multitracking projects marks a major stride towards sustainable transport, regional growth, and logistics efficiency. The rail expansion will benefit millions across 4 states while supporting India’s evolving transport needs.
