Bihar's Flavoured Makhana Export to Canada is Giving Farmers a 50% Income Boost

Bihar's Makhana farmers are set to benefit from higher earnings as the state's value-added flavoured fox nuts make their way to international markets. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) recently facilitated the first-ever sea shipment of flavoured Makhana from Bihar to Canada, a move expected to improve farmers' incomes while strengthening the state's agri-export ecosystem.
The initiative highlights how value addition, rather than exporting raw produce, can help farmers realise better prices and tap growing global demand for healthy snack products.
How Is the Export Boosting Farmers’ Income?
According to APEDA, the export of value-added flavoured Makhana has enabled associated farmers to earn more than 50% higher returns. Processing, flavouring and packaging the produce before export increases its market value, allowing exporters to secure better prices in overseas markets.
The move also creates opportunities across the supply chain, benefiting processors, exporters and local businesses while improving the competitiveness of Bihar's Makhana in international markets.
First Shipment Reaches Canada
The inaugural consignment comprises 7 metric tonnes of flavoured Makhana packed in two containers. The shipment was dispatched from Darbhanga, Bihar, through Mundra Port to ZKV Foods in Canada.
The products were processed and packaged by Nutrivin Agro Private Limited in compliance with international food safety and quality standards. APEDA said the successful shipment reflects the combined efforts of farmers, exporters, processors and government agencies to expand Bihar's agricultural exports.
Why Bihar's Makhana Has Global Potential
Bihar accounts for the largest share of Makhana production in India. The nutritious snack has witnessed rising demand overseas as consumers increasingly seek healthy and premium food products.
APEDA has been working with state governments, exporters, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and processors to improve export infrastructure, quality compliance and market access. By promoting value-added products, the authority aims to help farmers earn more while strengthening India's position in global agricultural trade.

Conclusion
The first sea shipment of flavoured Makhana to Canada marks more than an export milestone. It demonstrates how value addition can translate into higher incomes for farmers. As global demand for processed food products grows, Bihar's Makhana industry could unlock new export opportunities and create sustainable earnings for farmers across the state.
