E20 Petrol Explained: 5 Questions Every Car and Bike Owner Wants Answered

The rollout of E20 petrol has sparked several questions among vehicle owners, with concerns ranging from engine compatibility to fuel efficiency. The government has now issued detailed clarifications, citing scientific studies, industry data and feedback from automobile manufacturers to address these claims. Here's what you need to know.

Can Vehicles Manufactured Before 2023 Run on E20 Petrol? 

Yes, according to the government. E15-plus fuel has been in widespread use for over three years, while E19-E20 has been available for more than two years. During this period, there has been no verified evidence of widespread engine failure or vehicle breakdown linked to ethanol blending. Service data from leading automobile manufacturers covering crores of vehicles, including older models, also found no E20-related corrosion or abnormal component wear.

Will E20 Petrol Damage Older Vehicles?

The government says there is no evidence to support this claim. A leading automobile manufacturer serviced 2.84 crore vehicles during FY26, including around 1.5 crore vehicles that were not originally certified as E20-compatible, and reported no abnormal corrosion, wear or reduction in component life. Similar findings have also been reported by other major vehicle manufacturers.

Does E20 Reduce Mileage Significantly?

Not according to the government and automobile manufacturers. For certain older vehicles designed for E10 fuel, the reduction in fuel efficiency is generally limited to around 3-5%. Factors such as driving habits, tyre pressure, traffic conditions, vehicle maintenance and air-conditioner usage typically have a greater impact on mileage than ethanol blending.

Do Automobile Manufacturers Support E20?

Yes. Senior executives from Toyota Kirloskar, Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Hyundai Motor India, TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto have publicly stated that E20 was introduced only after extensive testing and validation. Manufacturers also continue to honour warranties for E20-compatible vehicles, reflecting confidence in the fuel's compatibility.

Why Does the Government Consider E20 Safe? 

According to the government, the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme has been implemented in phases over more than two decades, supported by scientific validation, industry consultations and continuous fuel quality checks. Oil marketing companies also conduct regular inspections to ensure ethanol-blended petrol complies with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications.
