The United States has notified Congress of two proposed defence support packages for India covering AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The combined value of the proposals is estimated at $482.2 million.

The notifications were published by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on June 17 under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. The US Department of State had earlier informed Congress about the proposed transactions on May 18, 2026.

Maintenance Package for M777A2 Howitzers

One of the proposals relates to India's fleet of M777A2 Ultra-Light Howitzers. The package is valued at $230 million and is intended to provide long-term support for the artillery systems already in service.

According to the notification, the package includes spare parts, repair services, technical assistance, training, field service representatives, depot-level support, and other logistics-related requirements.

India purchased the M777A2 howitzers from the US through the FMS route. The guns are deployed by the Indian Army, particularly in areas where lighter artillery systems are required due to terrain conditions.

Apache Fleet to Receive Sustainment Support

A separate proposal covers sustainment support for India's AH-64E Apache helicopters. The estimated value of the package is $198.2 million.

The proposed support includes engineering assistance, logistics support, technical publications, personnel training, and programme-related services. The helicopters are currently operated by the Indian Army for strike and battlefield support missions.

Contractors Named

The notification identified Boeing and Lockheed Martin as the principal contractors for the Apache support programme. BAE Systems, based in Cumbria in the United Kingdom, has been named as the principal contractor for the M777A2 package.

The proposed transactions involve support services and equipment required for maintenance and operational readiness rather than the acquisition of new platforms.
