The Essel Group, also known as the Zee Group, stands as an Indian multinational conglomerate holding company and corporate promoter with its headquarters situated in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Its origins trace back to 1926 when Jagannath Goenka established it under the name Messrs Ramgopal Indraprasad.
Initially, it operated as a commercial firm specialising in food grains within Hisar’s Adampur mandi (product market). In 1973, Subhash Chandra took over the company, renaming it the Essel Group in 1976. Expansion included the establishment of Essel Packaging in 1982.
In 1983, Essel Group ventured into entertainment with EsselWorld opening in 1989. In 1992, it entered the entertainment industry with Zee Telefilms Ltd. Zee TV, India’s first Hindi satellite channel, began broadcasting in 1992, capturing a significant market share by 1994.
In 2000, Zee Telefilms ended its partnership with Star TV. Zee faced competition from international and regional broadcasters. Essel entered a joint venture with Turner Broadcasting in 2002 and launched Dish TV in 2003. In 2006, Zee Telefilms was split into Zee News Ltd, Wire & Wireless India Ltd (later Siti Networks), and Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd.
Efforts to enter Indian sports broadcasting faced challenges, with the failed Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007. Zee sold its sports broadcasting assets to Sony in 2016, and the Turner India joint venture ended in 2018. Essel Group holds a workforce of nearly 8,000 employees.
The Essel Group is a diversified Indian conglomerate with activities spanning several industries:
Subhash Chandra Goenka, chairman of the Essel Group, is renowned for founding Zee TV in 1992. Born on November 30, 1950, in Adampur, Punjab (now Haryana), he comes from an Agarwal Bania family.
Starting in the family’s rice procurement business, Goenka later ventured into manufacturing flexible packaging, establishing Essel Packaging. He also created Essel World in north Mumbai. In 1992, he launched Zee TV, India’s second private commercial TV channel. In 2003, he played a key role in establishing Dish TV, India’s first satellite television provider. In 2016, Goenka entered politics, winning a seat in the Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate representing Haryana supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
