The Ministry of Defence on March 3, 2026, signed contracts worth ₹5,083 crore for the procurement of helicopters for the Indian Coast Guard and missile systems for the Indian Navy.
As per the news reports, the agreements were formalised at South Block in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The purchases form part of routine defence procurement for maritime security operations.
A contract valued at ₹2,901 crore has been signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the supply of 6 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk-III in the maritime role configuration.
The order also includes operational equipment, engineering support and logistics support services for the Indian Coast Guard.
The procurement has been placed under the Buy (Indian – Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category.
The ALH Mk-III helicopters are twin-engine aircraft designed for maritime operations. They can operate from coastal air bases as well as from ships deployed at sea.
According to the defence ministry, the helicopters are expected to support tasks such as coastal monitoring, surveillance of offshore installations, and assistance in protecting the marine environment and fishing communities.
The helicopter programme is expected to involve more than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises supplying components and equipment.
Government estimates indicate that the project could generate around 65 lakh man-hours of employment across manufacturing and related activities linked to the production of these helicopters.
In a separate agreement, the ministry signed a ₹2,182 crore contract with JSC Rosoboronexport of Russia for the procurement of Surface-to-Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles and related missile holding frames.
The system is intended for installation on frontline naval warships to support ship-based air defence operations.

The helicopter and missile contracts address equipment requirements of the Coast Guard and the Navy. While the helicopters will be used in maritime patrol and surveillance roles, the missile systems are intended to support air defence capability on naval platforms. Together, the agreements represent a combined procurement valued at ₹5,083 crore.
