Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) plans to commission a 14 gigawatt-hour (GWh) battery energy storage system at its Khavda project in Gujarat by the end of the current financial year, as per news reports.
The company has already commissioned 3.37 GWh of battery storage at the site and plans to increase the capacity to 50 GWh over the next 5 years.
Khavda is being developed as a 30 gigawatt (GW) renewable energy park with solar and wind power projects.
The battery storage facility is intended to store excess electricity generated at the site for use when generation falls or demand increases.
Rajat Seksaria, Chief Executive Officer for Battery Energy Storage and Green Hydrogen at Adani Group, said the Khavda project will have 30 GW of renewable energy capacity along with 14 GWh of battery storage at a single location after the next phase is commissioned.
The expansion comes as India continues to add renewable energy capacity while battery storage infrastructure remains limited.
According to industry data, around 300 GWh of clean electricity generated during the first quarter of 2026 could not be utilised because storage facilities were not available.
Battery energy storage systems are used to hold surplus electricity generated during periods of high solar or wind output and supply it later when required.
The systems are increasingly being added to renewable energy projects as generation capacity grows.
