The Indian government has launched a new Aadhaar mobile application, offering a major upgrade in how residents carry, share, and verify their digital identity. Developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the app focuses on privacy, consent, and ease of use.
Unlike previous Aadhaar services that often required sharing full Aadhaar numbers or photocopies, the new app allows selective sharing of credentials. Users can share only the details required for a specific purpose. This includes age verification under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act without disclosing additional personal data.
The app supports QR-based verification for multiple real-life scenarios. Optional face verification is available for various situations, such as cinema ticket bookings, hospital admissions for visitors or attendants, and verification of gig workers and service partners. The app aims to reduce dependence on paper-based Aadhaar copies used for identity checks in hotels, government offices, and other institutions.
Built around principles of consent, control, and data minimisation, the app offers a range of security functions. These include face verification for proof of presence, biometric lock/unlock in a single click, viewing of authentication history, and a QR-based contact card for easy sharing of contact details. Users can also manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device.
The app allows residents to update their registered mobile numbers directly from their device, without visiting a centre. Address updates are also supported, along with a contact card feature that enables users to share contact details digitally instead of using paper cards. UIDAI plans to add more update services in future versions of the app.

The new Aadhaar app represents a significant step forward in India’s digital identity ecosystem. By combining privacy-focused design, selective credential sharing, and easy verification for multiple use cases, the app simplifies how residents prove and update their identity. It also reduces reliance on paper documents, making digital verification safer, faster, and more convenient.
