The EPFO has made it easier for minor children to receive death claim settlements after the passing of an EPFO member. In a circular issued on August 13, 2025, the EPFO removed the requirement of a guardianship certificate for minor beneficiaries.
Earlier, if a deceased EPF member had minor children as beneficiaries, the family had to provide a guardianship certificate issued by a court. This process was often slow and complicated, delaying the release of funds.
Now, the EPFO has stated that no separate guardianship certificate is needed if the settlement amount is being directly credited to the minor's bank account. This step is expected to speed up the settlement process and reduce stress for the families of the deceased.
If a member of the EPFO passes away, the nominee, family member, or guardian can claim the settlement amount. The required documents include:
EPFO sends SMS updates to claimants at each stage of the claim process. Claimants can also check their claim status online by visiting the official EPFO website.
