The Delhi Government has approved the inclusion of beneficiaries under its widow pension and disability assistance schemes into the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, with the objective of extending health insurance benefits to more vulnerable sections of society.
According to official information, approximately 3.97 lakh widows and 1.31 lakh Divyang persons currently receiving financial assistance from the Delhi Government will now be covered under the centrally sponsored health protection scheme. Their family members will also be eligible for benefits.
With this move, around 5.5 lakh additional families are expected to be brought under the ambit of PM-JAY in the national capital. These families will be covered over and above existing eligible groups such as Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Household beneficiaries, senior citizens above 70 years, ASHA workers, and Anganwadi workers and helpers.
The Chief Minister stated that the expansion aims to ensure that economically vulnerable residents are not denied necessary medical treatment due to financial limitations. The initiative is designed to widen access to affordable and quality healthcare services across Delhi.
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is India’s flagship public health insurance programme that offers cashless treatment for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation. For its implementation in Delhi, 208 hospitals have been empanelled, including 156 private and 53 government-run facilities.
Official data indicates that over 29,120 beneficiaries have already availed treatment under PM-JAY through the State Health Agency in Delhi.
