All public and private sector banks in West Bengal are closed on Monday, January 12, to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, one of India’s most revered spiritual leaders and thinkers. The holiday applies to branches across the state and affects both government-owned and private lenders.

RBI Holiday Calendar and Regional Closure

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s official bank holiday calendar, banks in West Bengal are not open for in-person transactions today. The January 12 holiday is classified as a regional bank holiday, which means banking operations in other states continue as normal.

The RBI decides bank holidays based on a mix of national, regional and religious observances. National holidays such as Republic Day and Independence Day result in bank closures across the country, while regional holidays apply only to specific states depending on local significance.

Impact on Banking Services

Only physical branch operations are affected by today’s bank holiday. Customers can continue to use ATMs for cash withdrawals and deposits where available. Digital banking services including UPI payments, mobile banking apps, net banking, and card transactions remain fully functional throughout the day.

Customers are advised to plan branch-related work such as cash deposits, cheque clearances and documentation accordingly, especially if they rely on in-person services.

Remaining Bank Holidays in January

Several more bank holidays are scheduled across different states during the remainder of January. On January 14, banks will be closed in Gujarat, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam due to Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu. January 15 will see bank closures in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Sikkim for festivals including Pongal and Makara Sankranti.

Banks in Tamil Nadu will remain closed on January 16 for Thiruvalluvar Day and on January 17 for Uzhavar Thirunal. On January 23, banks will be shut in West Bengal, Odisha and Tripura due to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti, Saraswati Puja and other regional observances. January 26 marks Republic Day, a nationwide bank holiday.

In addition, six bank holidays in January fall on weekends, covering second and fourth Saturdays and all Sundays.
