From today (October 1), passengers must complete Aadhaar authentication to book train tickets online during the first 15 minutes after the reservation window opens. This rule currently applies only to Tatkal bookings made through the IRCTC website or mobile app.
The main purpose is to stop ticket touts and bulk bookings done for resale at higher prices. By giving Aadhaar-verified users priority, Indian Railways wants to ensure tickets reach genuine passengers fairly.
The Railways Ministry said the new rule will prevent misuse of the reservation system. Only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book tickets during the first 15 minutes. After this time, all other users and authorised agents can book as usual.
There is no change for passengers booking tickets at physical counters. The existing 10-minute restriction for ticketing agents at PRS counters will continue.
This Aadhaar-based restriction was first introduced for Tatkal bookings, which open one day before the train’s departure. Seeing its success, the Railways has now extended the same system to general reservations.

If your Aadhaar is linked, you can book tickets instantly when the window opens. Without it, you may have to wait until after the first 15 minutes, risking ticket unavailability on busy routes.
This move aims to create a fairer, more secure, and transparent booking system. By linking Aadhaar to IRCTC, passengers get priority access during the most crucial first 15 minutes, reducing the chances of touts and ensuring smoother bookings for genuine travellers.
