Waaree Energies, an Indian solar panel manufacturer, is currently under investigation by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) over allegations of evading tariffs imposed on solar products.

The probe centres on whether the company and its American branch circumvented anti-dumping and countervailing duties on solar cells imported from China and other Southeast Asian countries. This investigation comes in the wake of increased scrutiny by the US on solar panel imports from India and other nations in Asia.

US Customs Investigates Waaree Energies' Solar Import Practices

The US Customs and Border Protection initiated the probe after receiving reasonable suspicion that Waaree Energies and its US affiliate may have evaded anti-dumping and countervailing duties. These duties were introduced to protect American solar manufacturers from unfairly low-priced imports of crystalline silicon solar cells from China and Southeast Asia.

The investigation stems from the US government’s efforts to ensure fair trade practices and support domestic solar manufacturers amidst growing demand for renewable energy.

US Tariff and Trade Measures on Solar Panels

In August 2025, the US began investigating the import of crystalline silicon solar cells from India, Indonesia, and Laos, focusing on the possibility that these imports were being sold at artificially low prices. The measures, which include anti-dumping and countervailing duties, aim to level the playing field for US manufacturers who have long been concerned about unfair competition.

Waaree Energies’ involvement in this investigation has added further complexity to the already sensitive trade relations between India and the US in the solar energy sector.

Waaree’s Role in the Global Solar Market

Waaree Energies is one of India’s leading solar panel manufacturers and has made substantial inroads into global markets. The company’s products are known for their competitive pricing and high efficiency, making them attractive to cost-conscious buyers, especially in large markets like the US. However, this focus on price has raised concerns among US producers about unfair competition, prompting investigations like the one currently underway.

Conclusion

Waaree Energies' ongoing investigation by US authorities highlights the growing tensions in the global solar market over fair trade practices. The outcome of this probe could have significant ramifications for Waaree Energies, both in terms of its operations in the US and its standing in the global solar industry. As international trade regulations tighten, companies involved in the solar supply chain will need to be vigilant in ensuring compliance with all duties and tariffs.
