India marked a significant technological milestone with the introduction of Vikram, the country’s first fully indigenous 32-bit semiconductor processor chip. Developed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Lab and fabricated in Mohali, this chip positions India as a contributor rather than just a consumer in the global semiconductor landscape.
Vikram is a 32-bit microprocessor chip, engineered by the Semiconductor Lab of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Qualified for harsh launch vehicle environments, it represents the country’s stride towards semiconductor self-reliance. The manufacturing and packaging were executed at the Semiconductor Hub in Mohali, Punjab, under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), initiated in 2021.
The Vikram chip was officially presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Semicon India 2025, underlining India's commitment to electronics independence. The event also included the presentation of test chips from 4 sanctioned projects. Union Minister Jitin Prasada and Delhi CM Rekha Gupta were also present, signifying the high-level collaboration involved in this initiative.

The government has approved 10 semiconductor fabrication and assembly projects with an overall investment of over ₹1,60,000 crore across 6 states: Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Facilities like CG-Semi’s OSAT pilot in Sanand, Gujarat, will start producing chips soon, building India's manufacturing prowess.
Semiconductors are critical to modern infrastructure, powering healthcare, defence, telecom, automotive and space applications. The push towards chip production isn't just industrial; it's strategic, ensuring economic and national security. Companies like Vervesemi Microelectronics are designing next-gen semiconductors catering to defence, EVs and aerospace.
The launch of Vikram marks a turning point in India’s semiconductor journey, showcasing innovation driven indigenously by ISRO. As India strengthens its semiconductor ecosystem, initiatives like ISM and DLI are transforming the nation into a global technology hub.
