On December 8, 2025, the Supreme Court refused an urgent hearing on a plea concerning IndiGo's flight cancellations. The airline has been cancelling flights due to regulatory changes affecting pilots' duty norms.

This has resulted in significant disruptions, with over 250 flights cancelled from Delhi and Bengaluru airports alone.

At Delhi airport, 134 flights were cancelled, comprising 75 departures and 59 arrivals. Meanwhile, Bengaluru airport saw 117 cancellations, including 65 arrivals and 62 departures. These disruptions have left thousands of passengers stranded at airports nationwide.

Government Response to the Situation

The Supreme Court acknowledged the severity of the situation, with Chief Justice Surya Kant noting that the government has taken timely action. The court recognised the impact on passengers, many of whom may face health and other pressing issues due to the cancellations.

A lawyer highlighted that around 2,500 flights have been delayed, affecting travellers at 95 airports across India. The cancellations have not been communicated effectively to passengers, exacerbating the inconvenience.

Impact on Passengers and Airlines

IndiGo has been under scrutiny from both the government and passengers due to the ongoing flight cancellations. The airline's operations have been disrupted since December 2, 2025, leading to widespread inconvenience for travellers.

The cancellations have highlighted the challenges airlines face in adapting to regulatory changes. IndiGo's situation underscores the need for effective communication and contingency planning to minimise passenger disruption.

Conclusion

The Supreme Court's decision not to grant an urgent hearing on the IndiGo flight cancellations reflects confidence in the government's response. The situation remains challenging for passengers, with ongoing disruptions at major airports. The airline's operational difficulties highlight the complexities of regulatory compliance in the aviation sector.
