As the year comes to a close and global markets prepare to usher in the New Year, several major stock exchanges across the world are observing holidays or operating with shortened trading hours on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
On Wednesday, December 31, a mix of partial trading days and full closures is being observed across regions. In Asia, South Korea’s KOSPI and Japanese markets will remain closed. Several other markets are operating with shortened sessions, including Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong.
A few European markets such as Spain and the UK are also seeing curtailed trading hours as investors wrap up the year.
In contrast, the US stock markets will remain open for trading on December 31.
A larger number of global markets will be shut on Thursday, January 1, in observance of New Year’s Day.
In Asia, stock exchanges in China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan will remain closed. Australia and New Zealand will also observe holidays.
European markets including Germany, France, and the UK will be shut on January 1, while the US will also observe a holiday, resulting in limited global market activity on the first day of the New Year.
For Indian investors, the key takeaway is that domestic equity markets will continue to function as usual. Neither December 31 nor January 1 is a trading holiday for Indian stock exchanges. Both the BSE and NSE will remain open for trading on these days, consistent with past practice.
