On Friday, September 4, 2026, the NIFTY50 index opened at 23,910.90 and went on to register an intraday high of 24,005.75. The index managed to hold onto minor gains and closed at 23,897.70, up by 24.25 points or 0.10%.

The advance-decline ratio for the NIFTY50 index remained closely balanced but negative, with 23 constituents out of the 50 ending the session in the green, while 27 closed in negative territory and 0 remained unchanged.

SBI Life Insurance Company Limited (SBILIFE) emerged as the top gainer on September 4, 2026, with its share price rising 3.50% to ₹1,775.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 17,20,132 shares. 

Tata Steel Limited (TATASTEEL) ranked second among the top gainers, with its share price advancing 2.49% to ₹188.79 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 3,64,92,638 shares. 

HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited (HDFCLIFE) was the third top gainer, with its share price gaining 2.42% to ₹546.40 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 60,16,170 shares. 

Top Losers on September 4, 2026 

HCL Technologies Limited (HCLTECH) ended lower by 1.94% at ₹1,293.40 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 22,09,399 shares. 

Bharti Airtel Limited (BHARTIARTL) share price declined 1.55% to ₹1,840.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 36,13,693 shares. 

Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MARUTI) shares fell 1.27% to ₹12,694.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 3,22,649 shares.

Conclusion 

The NIFTY50 index closed higher by 0.10% at 23,897.70. The market breath remained slightly weak with a minor negative advance-decline setup despite positive moves from leading insurance and metal counters. SBILIFE, TATASTEEL, and HDFCLIFE emerged as the top gainers, while HCLTECH, BHARTIARTL, and MARUTI were among the top losers on September 4, 2026.
