According to the official National Stock Exchange (NSE) holiday calendar, all trading operations are closed today, November 5, to mark Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Both the BSE and NSE will remain shut, with no activity across the equity, derivatives, or currency segments.
Banks in several Indian states are also observing a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, resulting in a temporary halt to over-the-counter banking services.
Here’s how the holiday is impacting trading and banking schedules nationwide.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), trading will remain closed during the morning session (9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) today.
However, the evening session will function normally from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM / 11:55 PM.
Banks across several Indian states are also shut today in observance of Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Kartik Purnima, and Rahas Purnima.
States observing the holiday include Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh.
Major financial hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Hyderabad will remain closed.
However, banking operations in certain regions, including Chennai, Kochi, Gangtok, Guwahati, and Vijayawada, will continue as usual reflecting regional variations in festival observance.
Also called Gurpurab or Prakash Parv, Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru and founder of Sikhism.
The occasion honors his teachings of equality, compassion, humility, and service, which continue to guide and inspire millions around the world.
