Indian Railways is gearing up to launch India’s first hydrogen-powered train after successfully testing a hydrogen-powered driving power car at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This ₹136-crore project aims to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels, positioning India among a few nations developing such green railway technology.
Each train power car will store 220 kg of hydrogen in high-pressure cylinders (350 bar). The hydrogen reacts with oxygen in fuel cells to generate electricity, producing only water vapour as a by-product.
