Indian Railways to Launch ₹136-Crore Hydrogen-Powered Train After Key Test Success

Indian Railways is gearing up to launch India’s first hydrogen-powered train after successfully testing a hydrogen-powered driving power car at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. This ₹136-crore project aims to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels, positioning India among a few nations developing such green railway technology.
Project Details
- Initiated by: Northern Railway (2020–21)
- Components:
- Conversion of two 1600 HP diesel power cars into hydrogen fuel cell systems.
- Setting up a hydrogen storage & fuelling station at Jind, Haryana.
- Capacity: 10-coach DEMU carrying over 2,600 passengers.
- Route: Jind–Sonepat, two daily round-trip (356 km total).
- Hydrogen Facility Capacity: 3,000 kg storage at Jind.
How It Works
Each train power car will store 220 kg of hydrogen in high-pressure cylinders (350 bar). The hydrogen reacts with oxygen in fuel cells to generate electricity, producing only water vapour as a by-product.
Safety Measures
- Leak detection systems, flame sensors, pressure relief valves, temperature monitors, and enhanced ventilation.
- TÜV SÜD (Germany) as an independent safety auditor.
- CFD studies to assess leak scenarios.
Technology Partners
- ICF Chennai: Engineering & conversion.
- Medha Servo Drives (Hyderabad): Technical integration.
- All key systems, like converters, motors, and control systems, have passed in-house testing.

Hydrogen Fuelling Facility – Jind
- Holds 2,320 kg in low-pressure storage and 680 kg in high-pressure storage.
- Built as per Petroleum Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) norms.
- Includes firefighting systems, power supply, and access roads.
Conclusion
The hydrogen-powered train marks a milestone in India’s push for cleaner transport. By replacing diesel with hydrogen, Indian Railways is set to reduce emissions, lower fuel imports, and join the global race for sustainable mobility.
