India's automobile retail market reported broad-based growth in June, with total vehicle sales rising 21.83% year-on-year to 2.56 million units, according to Reuters, citing ting the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Passenger vehicles recorded sales of 410,853 units, an increase of 28.63% over the same month last year.
Other vehicle categories also registered higher sales. Tractor sales grew 25.31%, two-wheelers rose 21.22%, commercial vehicles increased 16.88%,, and three-wheelers recorded 16.21% growth.
Alternative-fuel models accounted for 40.35% of passenger vehicle retail sales in June, the first time the category has crossed the 40% level. The share had stood at around 38% in May.
Within the category, CNG vehicles accounted for 24.33% of passenger vehicle sales, followed by hybrids at 8.27% and electric vehicles at 7.75%. Passenger electric vehicle sales reached 31,823 units during the month.
According to FADA, higher petrol and diesel prices in May encouraged more buyers to consider vehicles powered by alternative fuels.
Retail sales in rural markets continued to outpace urban centres. Passenger vehicle sales in rural India grew 35.09%, while urban markets recorded growth of 24.67%.
Commercial vehicle sales followed the same trend, with rural demand rising 21.63% against 12.75% in urban areas. FADA attributed the growth to steady goods movement, e-commerce activity, and improved vehicle supplies.
The share of electric commercial vehicles increased to 3.53%, compared with 1.57% in June last year.
Electric two-wheelers accounted for 10.6% of overall two-wheeler retail sales in June, marking the first time the segment entered double-digit territory.
Maruti Suzuki had reported last month that bookings for its CNG models increased by 40% after fuel prices were revised upwards.
FADA President C.S. Vigneshwar stated that the recent rise in alternative-fuel vehicle sales followed the increase in fuel prices, although it remains unclear whether the trend will continue over the longer term.
FADA expects the festive season to support vehicle demand in the coming months but has advised passenger vehicle manufacturers to align wholesale dispatches with retail sales during the monsoon period to avoid higher dealer inventories.
For the July-September quarter, 66.17% of dealers expect growth, while 3.98% anticipate lower sales. The association identified the monsoon, affordability, and inventory levels as the key factors likely to shape demand in the near term.
