IBM has opened its first infrastructure innovation centre at the campus of the India Systems Development Lab (ISDL) in India.

As per PTI reports, the facility, named the Sangam Infrastructure Innovation Centre, will support work related to enterprise infrastructure and artificial intelligence.

The centre has been set up as a space where engineering teams can work with clients and technology partners.

Engineering Teams Brought Together

The centre houses engineers working across different layers of infrastructure technology. Teams involved in processor design, firmware, operating systems, and virtualisation will operate from the same building.

Reports suggest that this structure allows teams that usually work on separate parts of a system to coordinate their work more closely. The arrangement is to support joint development of enterprise infrastructure and AI-related systems.

India’s Role in IBM Infrastructure

ISDL is the largest development hub within IBM’s infrastructure business. The division works on technologies including mainframes, servers, storage platforms, cloud infrastructure and technology lifecycle services.

Engineering teams in India contribute to several parts of the infrastructure stack used in enterprise computing. This includes work on processors, system software, and other technologies used in large computing environments.

Work Across Multiple Indian Labs

Infrastructure development activities are spread across laboratories in Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad. Engineers based in these locations work on different parts of system development and platform engineering.

Teams in India are also involved in developing processors used in the company’s infrastructure systems. They contribute to parts of the operating systems that run on these platforms as well.

Continued Use of Mainframe Systems

Mainframe platforms continue to support large-scale enterprise applications. Industries such as banking, airlines, retail, and government rely on these systems to manage high volumes of transactions and data.

Despite being described as legacy technology in some discussions, mainframes remain used in enterprise computing environments.

Conclusion

The Sangam Infrastructure Innovation Centre adds to IBM’s existing development facilities in India. The centre brings multiple engineering teams together and will support work related to enterprise infrastructure and artificial intelligence systems.
