As per Live Law report, The Delhi High Court has issued a temporary order barring Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd from manufacturing sunscreen products displaying the word ‘SUN’ on labels, based on a trademark infringement case filed by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
On December 24, 2025, Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora passed an interim order after observing that the depiction of ‘SUN’ on the labels of Dr Reddy’s sunscreen products under the ‘VENUSIA’ range was prominent and appeared to function as a trademark.
Sun Pharma had argued that ‘SUN’ is a part of its registered trademarks and has been used since 1978. It also highlighted that it sells sunscreen products under the name ‘SUNCROS’, derived from the ‘SUN’ brand family.
Sun Pharma further noted that its ‘SUN’ mark is listed as a well-known trademark by both the Delhi High Court and the Trade Marks Registry.
According to its statement, Dr Reddy’s products prominently display ‘SUN’ in bold letters and a contrasting colour, overshadowing the actual product name ‘VENUSIA’ and potentially misleading consumers regarding product origin.
Dr Reddy’s countered that the word ‘SUN’ was merely descriptive in nature, referring to the product’s intended usage as sun protection.
The company even expressed willingness to make modifications to resolve the dispute. However, the court reviewed the product packaging and found that the visual prominence of ‘SUN’ could likely cause initial consumer confusion, particularly as the trade channels and product type between the two parties are similar.

Given the likelihood of deception and confusion regarding trademark association, the court directed Dr Reddy’s to refrain from further manufacture of the contested products. The order mandates maintenance of the current situation until the next court hearing, which is scheduled for January 23, 2026.
