Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered into a landmark agreement with the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), Hyderabad, a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The tie-up, formalised on 30 August 2025, focuses on the manufacture of fused silica radar domes, a critical technology for India’s missile guidance systems.

Technology Transfer Agreement

The arrangement is a Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT), covering the manufacture of radar domes through the cold isostatic pressing and sintering route. This process is highly specialised and essential for producing high-quality fused silica domes used in seeker-based missile guidance.

While the consideration and terms of the agreement remain confidential, the partnership underscores the trust placed in BHEL’s manufacturing capabilities.

Strategic Rationale And Benefits

DMRL, recognised for its expertise in high-temperature alloys and advanced ceramics, has transferred the radar dome technology to BHEL with the goal of enabling indigenous production. Radar domes are vital for protecting the sensitive seeker heads in missiles, making them one of the most critical components in advanced defence systems.

With this step, BHEL is positioned to play a direct role in enhancing India’s strategic self-reliance by supporting missile programmes with homegrown technology.

BHEL Share Price Performance

As of September 1, 2025, at 9:30 AM, BHEL share price is trading at ₹211.35 per share, reflecting a gain of 1.61% from the previous closing price. Over the past month, the stock has declined by 8.74%.

Conclusion

This collaboration not only strengthens India’s defence capabilities but also reduces reliance on foreign sources for advanced components. By leveraging DMRL’s scientific expertise and BHEL’s industrial strength, the agreement will drive the country’s push towards technological independence in the defence sector. The disclosure, made by Sayed Salahuddin, Manager of Corporate Communication at BHEL, marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in strategic defence systems.
