Indonesia has reached an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos missile system as part of efforts to upgrade its defence capabilities, particularly in maritime security, as per news reports.

Indonesia’s Defence Modernisation Plans

As per the report, the confirmation was provided by Rico Ricardo Sirait, spokesperson for Indonesia’s defence ministry, who said the agreement is part of the country’s broader military modernisation programme.

Sirait said the acquisition forms part of efforts to enhance defence capabilities, stating that it is “part of the modernisation of military hardware and defence capabilities, especially in the maritime sector.”

Earlier in 2023, BrahMos Aerospace had indicated that it was in advanced discussions with Indonesia regarding a potential missile deal estimated to be worth $200 million to $350 million, although the defence ministry declined to confirm the final value of the agreement.

About the BrahMos Missile System

The BrahMos missile is a supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia and produced by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture between India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia.

The missile derives its name from the Brahmaputra River in India and the Moskva River in Russia. It is among the fastest operational cruise missiles in the world, capable of reaching speeds of Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.

Operational Capabilities and Deployment

BrahMos can be launched from multiple platforms, including land systems, naval warships, submarines and aircraft such as the Sukhoi Su-30MKI operated by the Indian Air Force.

The missile was initially developed with a range of about 290 km, while newer versions have extended ranges of over 400 km.

Its ability to fly at low altitudes to evade radar combined with high strike precision makes it a key element of the operational capabilities of the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.
