Banks across India will remain closed on October 2 in observance of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and Durga Puja. This closure is part of a series of 21 banking holidays in October 2026, including major festivals like Durga Puja and Diwali.
Holiday schedules vary by state. For instance, banks in Gangtok (Sikkim) will be closed on October 3–4 for Durga Puja, while some banks in Agartala and Kolkata will observe Lakshmi Puja on October 6.
Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, and Shimla will see closures on October 7 for Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima.
October sees several consecutive holidays during Durga Puja and Diwali. Kali Puja, Naraka Chaturdashi, and Diwali (Deepavali) will lead to closures from October 20–22, followed by Bhai Dooj and Chitragupt Jayanti on October 23–24.
Regional holidays like Kati Bihu in Assam (October 18) and Chhath Puja in states like Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi (October 27–28) also affect bank operations. Ahmedabad banks will close on October 31 for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birth anniversary.
Despite physical branch closures, online and mobile banking services will remain active. Customers are advised to plan cash withdrawals, cheque clearances, and other essential transactions in advance, keeping the state-wise holiday list in mind.
