Diwali Muhurat Trading is a special 1-hour stock market session held on Diwali, considered one of the most auspicious times to invest according to Hindu tradition. The word “Muhurat” means an “auspicious time.” Investors believe buying stocks during this period brings prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead. The session marks the start of the Hindu accounting year, Samvat, and is filled with optimism, positivity, and festive enthusiasm.
As per NSE’s schedule, Muhurat Trading in 2025 will be held on Tuesday, October 21, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM.
For Futures & Options, Currency, and MCX, trading will also take place between 1:45 PM and 2:45 PM.
The tradition dates back to the time when stockbrokers aligned their financial year with Diwali, marking it as the start of a new accounting cycle. During this period, traders performed Chopda Pujan, a ritual to worship account books and pray for wealth and success.
Historically, Marwari traders sold shares during Diwali as they preferred money not to enter their homes on that day, while Gujarati traders bought shares to invite wealth. Today, this practice blends cultural heritage with modern investment, with many investors performing Lakshmi Pujan before making fresh investments.
Here’s how the session unfolds:
