Air India has added a new fare category called 'Basic' for economy-class passengers on select domestic routes, as per an announcement made by the company on June 16, 2026.
The option is available as part of a pilot programme and sits alongside the airline's existing Value, Classic and Flex fare categories. The new ticket type offers a lower-priced alternative by excluding complimentary meals from the fare.
Passengers booking the Basic fare will continue to receive a 15 kg checked baggage allowance and a cabin baggage allowance of 7 kg. Tea and coffee will also remain available on board without additional charge.
However, meals that are included with other economy fare categories will not be part of the ticket under this option.
Travellers who wish to have a meal during the flight can purchase one in advance up to 24 hours before departure. The airline has made vegetarian, non-vegetarian, Jain, and diabetic meal options available for pre-booking.
If a flight is rescheduled, the pre-booked meal will either be shifted to the revised service or refunded if unavailable.
The Basic fare is currently being offered only on selected domestic sectors and through Air India's direct booking channels, including its website, mobile application and ticketing offices.
The airline said passenger response during the trial phase will be reviewed before deciding whether the category should be expanded to more routes. The change applies only to economy class and does not affect Business or Premium Economy cabins.

The addition of the Basic fare introduces another pricing option within Air India's domestic network. Existing meal-inclusive fare categories remain unchanged, while passengers now have the choice of booking a ticket with fewer bundled services if they prefer.
