In a key development aimed at modernising railway infrastructure, Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to install Machine Vision Based Inspection Systems (MVIS) across select routes. The AI/ML-enabled technology is expected to revolutionise how under-gear components of moving trains are monitored, enhancing safety and operational efficiency.
The MVIS system works by capturing high-resolution images of moving trains' under-gear using roadside cameras and processing them with AI and machine learning algorithms. The system can automatically detect loose, hanging, or missing parts and instantly generate real-time alerts. This enables swift responses, preventive interventions and significantly reduces reliance on traditional manual inspections.
The agreement was formally signed at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, by Shri Sumit Kumar, Director (Project & Development), Railway Board and Shri Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical), DFCCIL. The ceremony was attended by key officials, including Shri B. M. Agrawal, Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), and Shri Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL, along with other senior representatives from Indian Railways and DFCCIL.
Under the terms of this agreement, DFCCIL will handle the procurement, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of four MVIS units. This deployment marks the first-ever introduction of such a system in Indian Railways, reflecting a decisive move toward intelligent infrastructure. The initiative is expected to reduce potential service disruptions and avoid accidents by identifying critical issues before they can cause operational failures.
The MVIS initiative fits into Indian Railways broader ambition of integrating smart, automated technologies across its network. With AI and ML applications being explored in diagnostics, scheduling, and safety monitoring, the organisation is embracing a digital transformation strategy aimed at making the national transporter future-ready.
This strategic adoption is not only about efficiency but also about building a safer, tech-enabled rail ecosystem that supports both freight and passenger services in the long term.
