Why Are Sugar Stocks Falling on Friday (August 21, 2026)?  

The decline in sugar stock price came after the government has allowed duty-free imports of up to 10 lakh metric tonnes of raw sugar until October 31, 2026, subject to specified conditions. The move comes ahead of the festival season, when sugar demand typically rises, and follows concerns over domestic supply availability.  

Following the announcement, sugar stocks declined up to 6% on Friday, August 21, 2026.  

Why Did Sugar Stock Rally in Recent Recently?   

Sugar stocks had rallied sharply in recent weeks amid a surge in sugar prices. According to The Economic Times report, sugar prices climbed nearly 40% over 2 months due to tightening supplies, prompting India, the world’s largest sugar consumer, to consider imports to address the supply gap.

A majority of the sugar stocks reacted negatively to the news and were seen trading in the red as of 2:16 PM on August 21, 2026, while the markets were trading flat.  

Balrampur Chini Mills share price witnessed the sharpest decline, falling 6.32% followed by Bannari Amman SugarsUttam Sugar MillsDwarikesh Sugar, and Shree Renuka Sugars, which declined up to 5%.
