Prudential HCL Health Insurance Begins Operations to Tap on India’s Fast-Growing Health Insurance Market

Prudential HCL Health Insurance Ltd has commenced operations in India under the Prudential Health India brand. The company is a joint venture between Prudential plc and the HCL Group.
Prudential holds a 70% stake in the insurer, while HCL Group owns 30%. The company received approval from the insurance regulator on 1 July 2026 to operate as a standalone health insurance business.
Entering the Health Insurance Market
The launch brings Prudential into India’s standalone health insurance sector. Gross written health insurance premiums in the country were estimated at around $16 billion in FY2026, or more than ₹1 lakh crore.
The company joins a market that has seen growing demand for health cover as healthcare costs and awareness around medical protection have increased.
Hospital Network in Place
Prudential Health India currently operates in partnership with ICICI Bank through ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company,. It starts operations with access to more than 12,000 hospitals across its network. Customers will be able to use the insurer for health cover and related policy services.
The company said its digital services will allow customers to choose insurance plans, manage policies, and seek assistance when needed.
Agency and Digital Channels
The insurer will use both physical and digital channels to reach customers. Its agency network will provide personal assistance, while a direct-to-consumer platform will allow customers to access services online.
Artificial intelligence will also be used in some customer-facing services and products. The company plans to offer digital tools as part of its policy purchase and management process.
Prudential Expands India Presence
The health insurance business adds to Prudential’s existing interests in India. The company already has joint venture operations in life insurance and asset management.
In May, Prudential announced plans to acquire a 75% stake in Bharti Life. The health insurance venture represents another addition to its insurance operations in the country.
HCL Group’s Stake
HCL Group’s 30% stake brings its technology, digital transformation and healthcare experience to the joint venture. Prudential, meanwhile, provides insurance and health-related business experience.
The two companies will run the standalone insurer through Prudential Health India, using a combination of agency distribution and digital services.
