The Indian government has set an ambitious target to install 39 lakh rooftop solar systems with a total capacity of 11,700 MW in the financial year 2026–27 under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), as informed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to a parliamentary panel.

Installation Progress and Targets

As of February 15, 2026, 14.62 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed, falling short of the target of 35 lakh for FY26. The MNRE reported a significant increase in monthly installations, reaching 2 lakh in January 2026, up from 15,000 in March 2024. The ministry projects that at a pace of 2.25 lakh installations per month, over 30 lakh additional systems can be installed by March 2027.

Budget Allocation and Utilisation

For FY26, ₹14,585 crore of the ₹17,000 crore budget allocated for the PMSGMBY was utilised. In FY27, approximately 92.8% of the ministry’s budget is earmarked for solar energy, with ₹22,000 crore allocated for the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which aims to achieve 1 crore rooftop solar installations by the end of FY27.

PM-KUSUM Scheme Achievements

Under the PM-Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, the MNRE aims to establish 2,000 MW of decentralised solar power plants, install 1 lakh solar agriculture pumps, and solarise 9 lakh grid-connected agriculture pumps in the next financial year.

In FY26, the ministry achieved 765.33 MW capacity for decentralised solar power plants and installed 10 lakh standalone solar agriculture pumps, against targets of 10,000 MW and 14 lakh installations respectively.

Conclusion

The government’s commitment to expanding solar energy through the PMSGMBY and PM-KUSUM schemes reflects a significant push towards sustainable energy solutions. The progress and targets set for FY27 highlight the focus on increasing solar capacity and supporting agricultural energy needs.
