The number of beneficiaries under the Mukhya Mantri Majhi Laadki Bahin Yojana has declined significantly in recent months, according to a report from The Times of India. The total count has reduced from 2.43 crore in September 2025 to around 1.7 crore by May 2026.
The reduction follows an extensive verification process conducted by the state government. Authorities have cited e-KYC compliance and updated eligibility screening as the primary reasons behind the drop.
The introduction of the e-KYC process in September 2025 played a central role in reducing beneficiary numbers. The verification exercise continued until the end of April 2026, ensuring that only eligible individuals remained enrolled.
Around 50 lakh beneficiaries were removed as they either failed to complete e-KYC or were found ineligible after submission. This step was aimed at improving transparency and ensuring correct beneficiary targeting.
Income verification led to the removal of approximately 12 lakh beneficiaries from the scheme. These individuals exceeded the annual family income limit of ₹2.5 lakh, making them ineligible under scheme guidelines.
Additional filters were applied based on participation in other welfare schemes and government employment status. The screening process ensured stricter adherence to defined eligibility criteria across all applicants.
Asset-based checks using RTO data contributed to further exclusions in the beneficiary list. Around 5 lakh women were removed due to ownership of a 4-wheeler, which disqualifies applicants under the scheme rules.
Another 5 lakh beneficiaries were found to be receiving benefits from the Namo Shetkari Yojana, leading to duplication concerns. Additionally, 4.5 lakh beneficiaries were excluded after crossing the upper age limit of 65 years.
Despite completing e-KYC formalities, some beneficiaries have reported delays in receiving stipends. The state government is currently reviewing complaints related to payment issues and eligibility mismatches.
Authorities are also investigating cases where beneficiaries were incorrectly disqualified based on asset ownership data. Efforts are underway to assist affected individuals, including linking them to alternative schemes such as the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana.

The decline of 73 lakh beneficiaries highlights a major revision in the implementation of the Ladki Bahin Yojana. The verification measures have focused on improving targeting efficiency and reducing duplication.
While the scheme continues to support eligible women, the updated criteria have significantly altered its beneficiary base. The development reflects a broader push towards stricter compliance in welfare scheme distribution.
