The Ministry of Cooperation has made significant progress in refunding money deposited with Sahara Group’s cooperative societies. As per recent data, over ₹5,139 crore has already been returned to more than 27 lakh verified depositors through a transparent and digital process, monitored by the Supreme Court-appointed authority.

₹5,139 Crore Disbursed as of July 23, 2025

In line with the Supreme Court’s March 29, 2023, order, ₹5,000 crore was allocated from the Sahara-SEBI Refund Account for refunding depositors. The Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies was entrusted with the disbursement under the guidance of former Supreme Court Judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy and Amicus Curiae Shri Gaurav Agarwal.

As of July 23, 2025, ₹5,139.23 crore has been paid to 27,33,520 applicants among the total 1,35,34,410 depositors.

Digital Refund Process via CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal

The CRCS-Sahara refund portal (https://mocrefund.crcs.gov.in), launched on July 18, 2023, enables eligible depositors from Sahara Credit Cooperative, Saharayn Universal Multipurpose Society, Humara India Credit Cooperative, and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society to file claims digitally. Depositors with matured and unpaid dues as of March 31, 2023, can apply and receive payments directly to their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.

Enhanced Limits and Resubmission Option for Claims

The initial ceiling for refund was ₹50,000 per depositor, mainly focusing on smaller investors. The limit is reviewed periodically based on remaining funds and priority groups. If any deficiencies are detected in applications, claimants are notified and can rectify and resubmit their details via the dedicated resubmission portal (https://mocresubmit.crcs.gov.in), which went live on November 15, 2023.

Deadline Extended to December 31, 2025

Recognising the scale of verification and disbursement, the Supreme Court has extended the deadline for processing claims up to December 31, 2025. As of now, ₹523.72 crore remains available for further distribution.

Conclusion

The Sahara refund initiative marks a major step in resolving long-pending depositor concerns, with over ₹5,139 crore already returned. The fully digitised process ensures transparency, prioritising smaller claimants while meeting legal and procedural obligations.
