The Ministry of Power and Bureau of Energy Efficiency are set to roll out a voluntary pilot programme aimed at reducing petrol and diesel consumption among officials through behavioural changes and transport efficiency measures.

RAHI Initiative Focuses on Fuel Reduction

The initiative, named RAHI or Responsible Action for High Efficiency Initiative, has been introduced following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to reduce fuel consumption.

The programme encourages officers to adopt practices such as carpooling, greater use of public transport and limiting unnecessary travel.

A dedicated digital portal is being developed for officers from the Power Ministry and Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) under the ministry to participate in the initiative.

Officials will be able to register both official and personal vehicles on the platform to track reductions in vehicle usage.

Incentives Linked to Lower Vehicle Usage

Under the programme, officers achieving month-on-month reductions in vehicle usage will receive financial incentives. A reduction between 10% and 20% will qualify for an incentive of ₹500, while a 21-30% reduction will attract ₹1,000.

Officials reducing vehicle usage by 31-40% will receive ₹1,500, while a 41-50% reduction will qualify for ₹2,000. Those cutting usage by more than 50% will receive the highest incentive of ₹2,500.

The initiative is designed to promote fuel-efficient travel behaviour while encouraging wider adoption of sustainable transport practices within government departments.

Power Ministry Suggests Work-From-Home Option

Alongside the RAHI initiative, the Power Ministry has also issued an advisory to its public sector undertakings to examine the feasibility of allowing limited work-from-home arrangements.

The advisory suggests permitting up to 20% of employees to work from home for 1 day each week, depending on operational feasibility and organisational requirements.

The move is intended to help reduce commuting-related fuel consumption while supporting broader energy conservation efforts.

Conclusion

The RAHI initiative marks a new effort by the Power Ministry and BEE to encourage fuel-saving behavioural changes through incentives, public transport usage and flexible work practices as India strengthens its focus on energy efficiency and fuel conservation.
