The Government has asked electronics manufacturers to increase production capacity for induction cooktops as it plans larger procurement under the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP), according to the news reports.
Officials recently held discussions with manufacturers and contract producers regarding future demand and supply readiness. Executives said procurement over the next 12-18 months could reach 6-8 million units.
The cooktops are to be distributed through Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a public sector joint venture under the power ministry, through a tender-based process.
EESL recently issued a tender for 200,000 induction cooktops. The tender closed earlier this month, and industry participants said it is being treated as a pilot procurement exercise before larger orders are placed.
A senior executive at an electronics contract manufacturing company said government officials informed companies that additional tenders are likely to follow.
Manufacturers were also asked to prepare for a substantial increase in production volumes if procurement expands further.
EESL said induction cooktops are being supplied through its retail platform along with products such as LED bulbs and BLDC fans. The company launched the NECP in 2023.
The government’s push towards electric cooking has gained attention after higher crude oil prices during the Gulf conflict increased pressure on fuel imports and the rupee. Officials have indicated that India’s LPG stocks are sufficient for around 45 days.
Industry executives said the government has been encouraging domestic manufacturers to increase localisation in induction cooktop production and reduce dependence on imported components.
Discussions have also covered electric cooking appliances for commercial and institutional use.
Under the NECP, EESL has already supplied induction cooktops in regions including Andhra Pradesh, Ladakh, and Tripura.
The procurement model is similar to EESL’s earlier LED bulb programme, where bulk orders helped lower prices over time.
Industry executives said the government is now looking at a similar approach to increase the adoption of induction-based cooking appliances across households.

The government is expected to expand procurement under the programme as manufacturers prepare for higher production volumes and future tenders.
