The government has issued directions to accelerate the rollout of piped natural gas (PNG) connections to essential institutions, as part of efforts to maintain steady energy access.
The move comes amid ongoing monitoring of fuel availability, with officials emphasising adequate supply of petrol, diesel and LPG despite geopolitical developments affecting global energy flows, as per the Economic Times report.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has instructed City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities to provide PNG connections to institutions such as residential schools, colleges, hostels, community kitchens and anganwadi centres within five days.
The directive applies in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already available nearby, enabling quicker activation of supply for these establishments.
The order places emphasis on ensuring uninterrupted access to cooking fuel for institutions that serve large groups, including students and vulnerable communities. Community kitchens and welfare facilities have been prioritised under this initiative.
The accelerated connection timeline is intended to reduce delays between application submission and the start of gas supply.
Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have stated that fuel supplies remain stable. According to the government, petrol and diesel stocks are sufficient, and refineries have increased domestic LPG production.
Authorities have also urged the public to avoid panic, noting that fuel availability at retail outlets and LPG distribution points continues without disruption.
Recent data indicates that around 7,500 PNG connections were provided in a single day across multiple regions. The government estimates that nearly 60 lakh households remain eligible for PNG connections and has encouraged faster adoption.
In addition, under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, LPG connections continue to be distributed, including to migrant workers. Smaller cylinders have also been supplied to support accessibility.

The directive to expedite PNG connections reflects a focus on strengthening last-mile energy access for essential services. While the broader supply situation is being closely monitored, current indicators suggest that fuel availability remains stable, with ongoing efforts to expand distribution networks.
