The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has asked City Gas Distribution (CGD) companies to increase the pace of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections to 30,000 per day.

As per an ANI News report, the goal is to improve household access and improve the use of existing pipeline networks across cities.

Number of Connections Pick Up

Recent data from the industry shows a steady rise in connection activity. Earlier, daily additions across India were around 3,000-4,000. This has now increased to about 10,000-12,000 connections per day.

The change follows improvements in execution and the resolution of earlier operational delays. However, the current pace is still well below the level indicated by the regulator.

Supply Position Remains Adequate

Gas availability for households is not seen as a concern at present. Domestic PNG consumption stands at roughly 3.8 million standard cubic metres per day, while overall domestic production is close to 100 million standard cubic metres per day.

This means the household segment uses only a small share of total supply. Allocation for domestic use has also been given priority, helping maintain steady availability.

Scope in Inactive Connections

A significant number of connections remain unused. Around 60 lakh households are already connected to PNG networks but are not actively consuming gas.

These inactive connections provide immediate scope for expansion without requiring new infrastructure.

Industry estimates suggest that the current base of about 1 crore users could increase if these connections are activated alongside new additions.

Pricing and Payment Options

To support adoption, CGD companies have introduced different payment options. These include instalment-based plans and schemes that lower the initial cost of getting a connection.

Some offers also include small incentives linked to connection charges. These measures are for making PNG more accessible across different income groups.

Conclusion

The push to reach 30,000 daily connections indicates a higher expected rollout pace. While supply and infrastructure appear sufficient, progress will depend on how quickly companies can scale execution.
