
Curbs on Commercial LPG supplies following the Gulf Conflict disrupted operations across restaurants, hotels and institutional kitchens, as per news reports.
Smaller establishments were affected more directly, while some larger operators began moving part of their cooking processes to electric alternatives. The shift has brought attention to reducing dependence on LPG in bulk-use segments.
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has asked electronics manufacturers to expand local production of commercial induction cooktops.
In a recent meeting, companies were asked to share production capacity, timelines, and constraints linked to localisation. Earlier efforts had focused mainly on household induction cooktops.
Demand for induction cooktops has risen 2 to 3 times over the past month across both household and commercial categories. The increase has led to pressure on existing production capacity and highlighted gaps in component availability.
Manufacturers have been asked to respond with near-term capacity expansion.
Industry participants reported delays in sourcing crystalline glass, a key component, with lead times extending to 40-45 days from 25-30 days earlier.
Around 40% of components, including electronic parts, continue to be imported from China. Some manufacturers indicated that easing certification requirements for imports could help address supply constraints in the short term.
Firms such as Havells India, Epack Durable and TTK Prestige have indicated plans to enter the commercial induction cooktop segment.
They stated that scaling up production would depend on improved availability of components and reduced supply bottlenecks.
The India Cellular and Electronics Association said the domestic small appliances manufacturing base remains limited, though efforts are ongoing to increase scale.
The transition towards electric cooking is also being reviewed in terms of its impact on power consumption.

This is to expand local induction cooktop production that follows supply disruptions and rising demand. Constraints in component sourcing and import dependence continue to influence the pace of expansion.
