Claims worth about ₹25,160 crore have been settled under the Centre’s Jan Suraksha insurance schemes since their launch in 2015, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Saturday, as per the PTI news report.

The schemes, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY), completed 11 years this month.

They were launched on May 9, 2015, to expand low-cost insurance and pension coverage, particularly among lower-income and unorganised sections.

Insurance Claims and Coverage

According to the finance ministry, PMJJBY has settled claims worth more than ₹21,500 crore, covering over 1.07 million families. PMSBY has settled claims of nearly ₹3,660 crore for more than 184,000 families.

PMJJBY provides life insurance cover of ₹2 lakh in case of death from any cause. The scheme is available to individuals aged 18 to 50 years at an annual premium of ₹436 through banks and post offices.

PMSBY offers accidental insurance cover at a premium of ₹20 per year for people aged between 18 and 70 years. The scheme provides ₹2 lakh for accidental death or total disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability.

Enrolment Numbers

The government said PMJJBY has recorded over 270 million enrolments, while PMSBY has crossed 580 million enrolments since launch. APY enrolments have crossed 90 million.

As of April 29, 2026, PMJJBY had 127.2 million women subscribers and 80.9 million enrolments linked to Jan Dhan accounts. PMSBY recorded 274.5 million women subscribers and 193 million enrolments through Jan Dhan accounts.

APY, aimed at workers in the unorganised sector, guarantees a monthly pension ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 after the age of 60, depending on the subscriber’s contribution level.

Digital Process and Access

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the online Jan Suraksha Portal has enabled enrolments without requiring visits to bank branches or post offices.

He added that digitisation of the claims process has helped speed up settlements and improve access for beneficiaries.

Conclusion

The finance ministry said digital enrolment and claim processing systems have supported wider access to the schemes. The programmes completed 11 years in May 2026.
