A video spreading on social media claiming changes in working hours and rest periods under India's new Labour Codes has been declared fake by the government.
The Ministry, through PIB’s Fact Check Unit, clarified the misinformation and reasserted the rules relating to worker rights.
The viral video alleged that factories could mandate 12-hour workdays while compensating employees only for 8 hours. It also claimed employers gained full control over determining workers' rest durations.
The PIB Fact Check Unit has confirmed these claims as entirely false. As per the clarified provisions under the new Labour Codes, any overtime requires explicit worker consent and must be compensated at double the wage rate.
The regulation of rest periods and work spread remains under the authority of the respective state or central government, not with individual factory owners. This safeguard ensures uniform working conditions across sectors. The government has reiterated that employers cannot unilaterally alter rest durations without regulatory oversight.
In line with legal provisions, the new Labour Codes emphasise protecting worker rights. Any overtime beyond regular hours must be voluntary and paid fairly. These codes have not diluted the rights of workers but are aimed at greater transparency and standardisation across sectors.

The government has urged citizens to verify claims through official channels such as the Ministry of Labour’s website or PIB Fact Check. Relying on unauthenticated social media videos can foster unnecessary panic and misinformation about sensitive worker policies.
The government’s clarification on the fake video concerning the new Labour Codes confirms that there have been no changes permitting employers to exploit overtime or rest schedules. Worker rights on compensation and rest remain regulated and protected by law.
